What's the secret to the Colorado Avalanche's early season success?
Jean-Sebastien Giguere robs Chris Kunitz
Goaltending has been a big part of Colorado’s early season success, and it was Jean-Sebastien Giguere putting on a show on Monday night.
Great penalty killing has been a big part of it. And so has some stellar goaltending from the duo of Semyon Varlamov and Jean-Sebastien Giguere.
On Monday night in Pittsburgh it was Giguere in net, and he was standing tall against a non-stop barrage of shots from the Penguins. He had to make a couple of spectacular saves, including this glove save against Chris Kunitz on a two-on-one late in the third period.
First, that’s a great saucer pass from Crosby to drop it right onto Kunitz’s blade. But that save ... my goodness. It’ was that sort of night for Giguere and the Avalanche.
Giguere ended up stopping all 34 shots he faced in a 1-0 win for the Avalanche in a game they were absolutely dominated in at even-strength, only to win because of their great penalty killing and goaltending.
