Niklas Backstrom injury: Goalie leaves game in first period

Niklas Backstrom was injured in the first period of Tuesday’s game against the Nashville Predators

Minnesota Wild goalie Niklas Backstrom had to exit Tuesday's game against the Nashville Predators after he was involved in a collision with Eric Nystrom.

Nystrom was knocked into Backstrom, awkwardly driving the Minnesota goalie into the net. Backstrom had to leave the game and was replaced by backup Josh Harding.

The problem for Harding is that Nystrom was awarded a penalty shot on the play after he was hauled down, knocking him into Backstrom. That’s a difficult situation for a goalie to come into cold and Nystrom ended up scoring to give Nashville a 3-1 lead.

Backstrom appeared in 42 games for the Wild last season and posted a .909 save percentage to go with a 24-15-3 record.
