Anton Volchenkov injury: Leaves game with lower body injury

Anton Volchenkov left Tuesday’s game with a lower body injury and will not return.

New Jersey Devils defenseman Anton Volchenkov left Tuesday's game against the New York Rangers with what the team is calling a lower body injury. He will not return to the game.

Volchenkov played just five minutes in the first period before leaving.

In 16 games this season Volchenkov has not scored and has three assists. The 31-year-old defenseman is currently in the fourth year of a six-year, $25.5 million contract he signed with the team in free agency prior to the 2010-11 season. In his previous three years with the team injuries have been a problem as he’s appeared in just 166 of a possible 212 regular season games for the Devils.

The injury problems shouldn’t be a huge surprise given his style of play (a physical, shot-blocking defenseman) and the fact they existed in Ottawa as well, but it does leave the Devils defense shorthanded.
