Devils vs. Panthers: Ilya Kovalchuk fights momentum, loses badly on slap shot

Good job, good effort.

Apparently Ilya Kovalchuk likes to do his warm-ups in-game.

Kovalchuk made one of the biggest whiffs of the season on Saturday when he desperately tried to defeat momentum by turning on a dime and firing a slap shot from near the blueline. As you might expect, he shanked it. You can almost see the question marks running through his head as he watched the puck skitter away.

“What the heck was I thinking?”

Not one for public humiliation, Kovalchuk ripped a laser slap shot just a few seconds later just to prove he could actually do it correctly. It rang off the post and into the stands, but we got the point, Ilya. You’re dangerous.
