Shawn Matthias injury: Panthers’ forward gets hit in face by shot

Matthias was not wearing a visor.

Panthers forward Shawn Matthias was injured on Saturday in a play that is seemingly becoming a common occurrence across the NHL.

Matthias was struck on the side of the face by a shot from teammate Dimitry Kulikov in the second period of the Panthers’ game in New Jersey. Matthias immediately crumpled to the ice and it appeared that the shot drew blood. He left for the locker room and hasn’t been heard from since.

Matthias was not wearing a visor. Not that it would’ve helped, as it appeared the puck hit him in the side of the face and not near the eyes. Either way, the Panthers lineup is already devastated by injuries so they are certainly hoping for a speedy recovery.
