The Blues needed 101 minutes to settle the first game of their Western Conference series against the Blackhawks on Thursday, winning 4-3 in 3 OT. The Avs sent their game with the Wild to OT by tying the game with 14 seconds remaining before winning 5-4.. Three of the first seven games of the Stanley Cup playoffs have needed extra action.

When they didn’t get it, Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville absolutely lost his mind on the bench and (and we’re only guessing on this) seemed to be telling the referees to, um, for lack of a better phrase, grow a pair and make a big call.

A couple of years ago in a Rangers-Devils playoff game, Sean Avery was doing Sean Avery things in front of Martin Brodeur, swinging his arms back and forth in an effort to distract the Hall of Fame goalie. The NHL did not find the humor in it and immediately changed the rules with what has affectionately been referred to as “the Sean Avery rule.”
On Thursday, in the first period of the Wild-Avalanche game, Colorado’s Semyon Varlamov was trying to even the score for goalies everywhere.

A power outage knocked out the lights at SAP Center in San Jose just minutes before the Sharks and Kings took the ice to warm up for Game 1 of their first-round series. Several writers, including Kings beat writer Helene Elliott and CSN’s Ray Ratto, reported hearing loud “bangs” and “booms.”
The regular lights eventually started to come back on, but the scoreboard and sound systems are apparently still down. No source of the outage has been revealed yet, but given the temperature in San Jose on Thursday it seems that the power supply might have been working overtime to keep the ice in playing condition.
