Patrice Bergeron breaks stick, prevents breakaway with open ice hip check

No stick? No problem for Patrice Bergon.

Already trailing by a goal, a broken stick at the blue line nearly turned into a disaster for Patrice Bergeron and the Boston Bruins late in the third period of Game 1 of their second round series against Montreal.

As Bergeron attempted a one-timer, his stick snapped in half, giving Montreal’s Rene Bourque what appeared to be an opportunity to take off up the ice on a breakaway. That’s when Bergeron, without a stick, went down and delivered this open-ice hip check, sending Bourque flying through the air.

Is that a good hit? A little too low? Going for the knee? Didn’t matter as the officials seemed to think it was all good.

The Bruins would go on to tie the game with less than two minutes to play thanks to a Johnny Boychuk goal, sending the game to overtime.
