Capitals player tries to sideswipe Sharks’ bench, gets slashed instead

Jason Chimera thought he was being sneaky.

When NHL players get mad at each other, they usually settle it on the ice in various forms of pushing, shoving or face-punching. But Washington Capitals forward Jason Chimera let his frustrations spill over into an opposing bench on Tuesday and paid for it with a slash from a future Hall-of-Famer.

Chimera took offense to a play late in the third period. Chimera earned a breakaway chance on Capitals goalie Braden Holtby, but Sharks winger Tommy Wingels tripped him before he got there, and Chimera went sliding leg-first into the net frame.

He was clearly in serious pain on the Capitals bench afterwards, but he had to wait a few minutes before he could earn his revenge.

It earned him a few minutes in the penalty box, while Thornton got off with a verbal warning from the referee. Credit to Chimera for trying something new in the “hockey roughhousing” department, at the very least.
