Before the Edmonton Oilers even suited up for their game in Dallas on Tuesday, fourteen NHL rookies had already scored their first career goal this season. Not one of them was Connor McDavid, the Oilers first overall pick who many compare to a young Sidney Crosby.
Connor McDavid scores first NHL goal with a sweet deflection
Not as flashy as Eichel’s, but we’ll take it.

That had to change eventually, and it finally did in Dallas. McDavid came inches from deflecting in the Oilers' first goal, but he made up for it a few minutes later in the second period when defenseman Andrej Sekera fired a shot from the blueline. McDavid just barely got his stick on it, but it was enough to send it past goalie Kari Lehtonen.
There's no doubt McDavid's career has started slower than his counterpart Jack Eichel in Buffalo, but it's just the first week. We'll see if this breaks the dam and starts the flow of highlight reel plays we expect from McDavid for years to come.
