Marchand didn’t escape the referee’s wrath on Thursday.

Marchand found himself in the penalty box and in the crosshairs of Detroit fans when he was caught spearing defenseman Jonathan Ericsson in the groin in the third period.
Ericsson and Marchand were jostling a bit near center ice when Marchand blatantly twisted his stick around and speared Ericsson in the most painful of regions.

— Pete Blackburn (@PeteBlackburn) April 3, 2015 Marchand tried to argue that Ericsson dove and fell onto the stick, which I guess is somewhat plausible if you only saw this half of the play.
But between the GIF of him holding the stick between Ericsson’s legs and the GIF of him twisting it upwards, Marchand’s argument falls apart pretty quickly here. Detroit failed to score on the ensuing power play.
