Fresh off appearing in South Africa with the United States Men's National Team, Brian Carroll has been traded to the Philadelphia Union in exchange for the 28th overall pick in the 2011 SuperDraft and an unspecified amount of allocation money.
MLS Expansion Draft: Crew Trade Brian Carroll To Union For Draft Pick
The trade allows the Crew to recoup something for Carroll, who they had already decided not to protect.
The 29-year-old was a regular starter in the midfield for the Crew, and has been known for his defensive abilities than anything else. He has scored just four goals during his eight-year MLS career.
He was originally drafted in 2003 by DC United, who was then being coached by Peter Nowak, the man now in charge of the Union. He spent five years in DC before being traded to the Crew after being selected by the San Jose Earthquakes during the 2007 Expansion Draft.
During three seasons in Columbus, he started all but seven matches and played almost 7,500 minutes.
