There’s been speculation for several hours that the release of the MLS expansion protection list has been delayed by a Sounders trade.
MLS Expansion Draft: Sounders Trade Peter Vagenas To Rapids For Baudet, Earls
There may be some truth to that.
It was just announced that the Sounders managed to move Peter Vagenas to the Rapids in exchange for defenders Julien Baudet and Danny Earls.
Vagenas was a favorite of Sounders coach Sigi Schmid, but was of little use on Seattle’s roster. He made $117,000 last year, but received just six regular season starts and was not even activated to the 24-man roster after recovering from an injury.
Baudet and Earls received 29 starts between them, but had clearly fallen behind others on the depth chart. Combined, they had just two starts in the Rapids’ final 10 matches. While Earls made just $41,000 last year, Baudet made more than $180,000.
None of the players involved in the trade are expected to be on their teams’ protection lists.
