Wigan may have played the beautiful football, but it was a moment of beauty (and, as the cliché goes, brilliance) from Blackburn that's separated the two sides. In the 59th minute, Morten Gamst Pedersen has given the home side a 1-0 lead.
Blackburn Rovers 1-0 Wigan Athletic: Deadball Brilliance From Morten Gamst Pedersen Gives Blackburn Lead
The goal came from a dead ball deep down Blackburn’s right attacking flank. Twelve yards from the byline, Pedersen stood above the ball and looked set to serve a standard cross in front of goal. Instead, the left-footed ball was played to the far post, curling into the upper corner for the match’s opening score.
Wigan had enjoyed the better of play through the first half, having one goal called back and seeing other attacks wreck Blackburn's defense. Still, Sam Allardyce's team has done in front with a tried-and-true formula. Whereas the dead ball is normally a chance for the likes of Christopher Samba to give Blackburn control, today Blackburn used a rare show of skill.
With it, the home side has taken the lead, threatening to jump out of the relegation zone at Wigan’s expense.
