The biggest story in Serie B this weekend was the firing of Sampdoria coach Gianluca Atzori, appointed last June with the expectation that he'd have the relegated Doria back in Serie A next season. Instead, a 1-0 home loss to Vicenza had Sampdoria dropping down to 7th, a fall that required immediate action. Sensing a void left by Palermo's firing of Serse Cosmi, Samp appointed Beppe Iachini as the designated baseball-cap-wearing Italian coach.
Sampdoria Fire Gianluca Atzori, Appoint Beppe Iachini
Iachini’s last spell in charge was with Brescia, where Beppe actually had two chances to lift the fortunes of the Rondinelle. He took Brescia up into Serie A for the 2011-2012 season following a playoff win over Torino, but the team never managed to gain much traction up with the big boys. Iachini was fired in December 2010 but re-appointed two months later, although he was unable to lift Brescia out of the relegation zone.
Considering Brescia's inability to do anything save for park a giant bus in front of their goal last season, it's hard to fathom that Sampdoria will become a more enthralling team to watch. But something tells me that watchability is not the first priority for Riccardo Garrone.
