In an injury update that's not really an update, but more a notification that things are exactly as they were two days ago, Real Salt Lake's central defenders Jamison Olave and Nat Borchers are questionable, day-to-day, game time decisions or whatever you prefer. Whether they can play in Sunday's Western Conference final against the Los Angeles Galaxy will not be known until about 30 minutes before kickoff when the team submits their starting lineup and bench for the match.
Real Salt Lake Injury Update: Jamison Olave, Nat Borchers Still Questionable
“Their status is day by day, and questionable. It will be questionable all the way to game time,” RSL head coach Jason Kreis told the Salt Lake Tribune. “Both of them have improved. Borchers is improving day by day, and I just talked to Olave and he says he’s getting closer, too. Good signs.”
The central defensive pairing is one of the best in MLS, but both have had injury problems this season and were injured in the first leg of Salt Lake's conference semifinal against Seattle. They did not play in the second leg, a match that saw them concede twice and almost blow the 2-0 lead they built in the first leg. If one of them cannot go, Chris Schuler will slide in and if neither cannot play, Chris Wingert or Robbie Russell will join him. That is still a capable central defense, but miles short of the dominating Olave, Borchers pairing.
From LA’s perspective, they think the two will play. Galaxy head coach Bruce Arena said as much in a conference call, stating “I’ll be honest with you – I’m expecting them to play. We’re planning on them playing.”
