Roberto Martinez's Wigan Athletic have been handed new life by a late late goal from Maynor Figueroa, turning an early 1-0 deficit against Birmingham City into a 2-1 win and three crucial points for the relegation-threatened side. Liam Ridgewell opened the scoring for Alex McLeish's side, smashing home from a suspiciously offside position six minutes in, but Wigan deserved better from a match in which their footballing pedigree shone through. Unlike in the 1-0 defeat to Manchester City two weeks ago, they got it.
Wigan Athletic Vs. Birmingham City: Maynor Figueroa Earns Wigan Last-Gasp Win
Manchester United loanee Tom Cleverly got the hosts back to level pegging after finishing off a neat passing move from close range, and Wigan went on to dominate the match, despite Sebastian Larsson hitting the crossbar from a long-range free kick and Birmingham being denied what seemed a clear penalty. For all of their possession and chances, though, Wigan just couldn't find the net - until the 92nd minute, anyway, when Figueroa shot hopefully from 22 yards and Ben Foster completely missed his save. Wigan got their deserved three points while results elsewhere see Birmingham slip to 19th in the table.
