It took all of five minutes into their 2011 MLS season for the Philadelphia Union to put the scoreboard to work. Away to the Houston Dynamo, the second-year club made good on a throw in deep in the Dynamo end for an early goal to put the Union ahead, 1-0.
Philadelphia Union Vs. Houston Dynamo: Union Jump Out To Early Lead At Dynamo
Sheanon Williams took a throw in deep on the right side of the Dynamo half and his cannon of a throw caught Houston by surprise. The throw made it all the way to the center of the pitch, five yard from goal. There, Sebastian Le Toux settled and turned the ball towards goal, but it clattered off of the cross bar. With the keeper still scrambling from his attempt at saving Le Toux's shot, Danny Califf only had to put the rebound on frame for the goal and he did with ease.
Last season as an expansion franchise, Philadelphia did not have a ton of trouble scoring goals. They had their fair share of goals, but struggled to keep opponents from getting goals of their own and it resulted in a rough season near the bottom of the Eastern Conference table. Now the Union has struck first in their second season, but whether they have improved their defense and can keep the Dynamo off of the scoreboard will determine their fate.
