Three minutes of stoppage time was not enough for Chivas USA as they fall 3-2 in their home opener to a spirited performance from Sporting Kansas City. An early goal from rookie C.J. Sapong forced the hosts to chase the game all match, and although they staged a very good first half comeback a lob by Omar Bravo at the stroke of half time saw Chivas go into the break staring at a 2-0 deficit.

Despite being two goals down, the home side's performance had been highly encouraging, and they were never out of the match. Shortly after the break, ex-Wizard Jimmy Conrad cut the score to 2-1 after Kansas City failed to clear a corner, but Omar Bravo made it a brace with a gorgeous dinked finish over a helpless Zach Thornton, who had to that point seen three shots on target and made zero saves.
Bravo's second goal looked like it might have killed off the match, but Ben Zemanski made things very interesting as Kansas City again failed to team with a corner and the midfielder was able to halve the lead with ten minutes of the match remaining. Chivas threw bodies forward to try to find the equalizer, but it just wouldn't come - they're left with the knowledge that they played very well in what was ultimately a hugely entertaining match.
