Just as was the case in the other MLS match being played in Texas, the visiting team scored first to put the home side on their heels. In Houston, the goal came on a tap in off of the cross bar, but in Dallas it came off of a save, not that the Chicago Fire will complain about how they got their goal to go ahead 1-0 on FC Dallas at Pizza Hut Park.
Chicago Fire Vs. FC Dallas: Diego Chaves Gives Fire Early Advantage
A 17th minute scramble in the box saw Cory Gibbs do well to turn and put a shot at the far post. Last season, Kevin Hartman stood on his head time and time again with incredible saves to bail Dallas out and he did it initially again on this play, making a diving save to stop Gibbs' shot. Just when the shot was save though, Diego Chaves made a run at goal and found the ball at his feet with a gaping goal, which he was only too happy to fill with an easy tap in.
The new Uruguayan signing Chaves has already made his presence felt with the opening goal and now Chicago will turn their attention to keeping the MLS Cup finalists from a year ago from finding an equalizer. If nothing else, Dallas will have the support of a large home crowd, something they rarely have at Pizza Hut Park, but the supporters seem to have been caught up in the team’s run to MLS Cup a year ago.
