DC United started the season on a positive note after a Charlie Davies - yes, that Charlie Davies - brace powered them to a 3-1 home win over a mediocre Columbus Crew. After the first half ended scoreless thanks to a total lack of ruthlessness on the part of the hosts, the game looked like it could be headed for a draw, but Josh Wolff's goal in the 51st minute changed the match in two ways, putting DC 1-0 up - and sending Davies on for his first competitive appearance in almost eighteen months.
D.C. United Vs. Columbus Crew: Charlie Davies Nets 2 In 3-1 D.C. Win
Davies' first goal was scored on a penalty kick, but his second was a strike of pure class, seeing the forward latch onto a long pass forward, blow past Chad Marshall like he wasn't even there, and slot home with William Hesmer helpless. Yeah, Columbus got one back shortly thereafter, but a full-time score of 3-1 isn't a whole lot better than 3-0. DC get a big win, and if Charlie Davies really is back to his best now boast one of the more dangerous front men in the league. It's been a pretty good day for them, I'd say.
