Most expected the Houston Dynamo to hold at home in the season opener against the Philadelphia Union and pick up three points, but the visitors had other ideas. An early goal put the Union ahead and some unexpectedly stingy defending made that goal hold as Philadelphia picked up a 1-0 win and three points to start off their second year in existence.
Houston Dynamo Vs. Philadelphia Union: Danny Califf Goal Holds Up As Union Defeat Dynamo 1-0
It wasn't long before the Union had struck. A throw in deep in the Houston half by Sheanon Williams surprised the entire Houston defense. it flew all the way to the center of the pitch where Sebastien Le Toux was waiting and the Dynamo defense was watching. Le Toux settled and turned, smacked a shot off of the crossbar, but Danny Califf was waiting and tapped the ball in for what proved to be the game-winning goal.
The biggest surprise of the match is that Philadelphia managed to keep a clean sheet. As an expansion team last season, the Union kept just two clean sheets the entire season and made waste of what was a surprisingly threatening attack. Unfortunately for the Union, no matter how much of an attack they had thanks in large part to Le Toux, their defense couldn’t get the job done. Well, through one match in 2011 they have gotten the job done and they’ll take that clean sheet for three points in Houston.
