Mike Dean has turned down a major shout for a Manchester City penalty when James Milner burst into a terrible back header and was brought down by an illegal barge by Tottenham Hotspur centre half Michael Dawson. Dean waved the appeals away - replays show that it was a foul but that contract occurred outside the box, so Dean was at least half-right.

City won't mind that too much, however, because they're now ahead. A spell of Tottenham pressure culminated with Luka Modric flashing a shot just wide after good work by Aaron Lennon (who is merrily destroying Pablo Zabaleta on the right), but the action went right back down the other end. City won a corner, it was worked short, and James Milner's driven cross was deflected into the net by Spurs striker Peter Crouch. Ouch.
