Barcelona's scoreless draw with Deportivo La Coruña was hardly the most interesting match of the day, but it was all about the trophy ceremony after the match as Barca officially celebrated their La Liga title. Meanwhile, there were plenty of entertaining matches across the rest of Spain, but despite some big victories by clubs fighting against relegation, the results really didn't change anything in the table with only one round of matches left in the season.
Spanish La Liga Sunday League-Wide Full Time Summary: Barcelona Lifts The Trophy
A wild three minutes of play in early in the second half helped Athletic Bilbao earn a 1-1 draw with Málaga. It started when Martín Demichelis conceded a penalty to Bilbao, earning his second yellow card and a sending off. David López hit the post with the PK and Málaga appeared to escape. However, two minutes later Elisue commited a handball in the box, giving Bilbao another penalty which López converted to the bottom left corner.
A brace from Frederic Kanouté propelled Sevilla to a 3-1 victory over Real Sociedad, while a 50th minute strike from Nacho Novo was enough to give Sporting Gijon a 2-1 victory over Racing Santander. Leonardo Ponzio's 55th minute goal gave Real Zaragoza a huge 1-0 victory over Espanyol, but instead of pulling them out of the relegation zone, they remained in 18th thanks to Deportivo La Coruña's scoreless draw at Barcelona and Getafe's 2-0 win over Osasuna.
After his penalty miss in the first half, David Trezeguet made up for the mistake with a 67th minute goal that brought Hércules even with Atlético Madrid until Jose Antonio Reyes out Atlético back in front just four minutes later. That was all Atlético needed to earn a 2-1 victory.
Looks like we’ll have to wait until next weekend to finally find out which club will join Hércules and Almeria in the Second Division next year. While Atlético Madrid, Bilbao and Sevilla will enter the final round with all three clubs at 55 points.
