Well that wasn't very good by West Ham United. They had shown some early attacking promise, including having a header cleared off the line by the Blackburn Rovers defence, but they were always going to be vulnerable to the counterattack and now the visitors have made them pay.
West Ham United Vs. Blackburn Rovers: Jason Roberts Gives Visitors Lead
Jermaine Jones won a fifty-fifty ball with Thomas Hitzlsperger in the centre circle and despite being scythed down by the Hammers midfielder he was able to keep play going and eventually shoot a pass over to Brett Emerton in support down the right flank. The Australian's cross was low and expertly turned in past Robert Green by the expert boot of Jason Roberts, with Manuel da Costa inexplicably pulling up in his attempt to mark the striker.
Very odd goal to give up from the defence’s standpoint - there were two good opportunities to stop that and you’d have to think that da Costa in particular should have done better. Considering this is a must win game for Avram Grant’s men, one might expect more from them.
