Blackburn defender Phil Jones is on the way to Old Trafford, according to reports from the Guardian. The 19-year-old, who appeared in 27 games with Blackburn in the 2010/11 as a now fully-established member of their first team, has been pursued by the biggest names in English football as they attempt to secure the services of talented home-grown players. With Jordan Henderson already set to move to Anfield, in order to join Kenny Dalglish's Liverpool revolution, it was time for Manchester United to act, and they have, apparently paying Blackburn £16M for the right to sign Jones (the value of his release clause).
Manchester United Transfer Rumors: Phil Jones Nears Switch To Old Trafford
Jones is expected to sign a five-year contract with United after undergoing medicals in Manchester, and is a key part of the England under-21 squad at this summer’s European championships in Denmark. It’s a good pickup for Sir Alex Ferguson and company - Jones could well be versatile enough to step into a midfield destroyer role that the team has been missing for some time, and he’s a perfectly capable centre half to boot.
