New England Revolution Vs. Vancouver Whitecaps, 2012 MLS: Lee Nguyen Leads The Way

Lee Nguyen scored two goals and added an assist against former team as the New England Revolution registered arguably their biggest win of the season, 4-1 over the Vancouver Whitecaps on Saturday. Despite the lop-sided score, the Revolution actually had to overcome an early deficit, as Eric Hassli scored his second goal of the season just four minutes in.

But Nguyen equalized just two minutes later, pouncing on a loose ball in the box and scoring his first goal of the season. Nguyen that set up Saer Sane's go-ahead goal in the 24th minute. The Revolution led 3-1 by halftime, following Shalrie Joseph's first goal of the season.

The highlight of the evening came in the 72nd minute. Nguyen took a throw-in deep in the Whitecaps' end, quickly controlled it and fired a shot from about 25 yards out that easily beat Whitecaps goalkeeper Joe Cannon to the far post.

Not only was it the Revolution’s first three-goal victory since April 10, 2010, but it was also a bit of a revenge game for Nguyen, who had been cut by the Whitecaps during the offseason before making an appearance. Nguyen has since established himself as a starter in New England, but had yet to have anything close to the breakout performance he had in this game.

The Whitecaps, who entered the game with the third fewest goals allowed in MLS, were clearly missing center back Jay DeMerit, who did not play.
