Ecuador have confirmed their place at next summer's World Cup after an impressive qualification campaign. Despite the terrible death of their star striker Christian Benítez back in July, La Tri have rallied to finish in an automatic qualification spot in the CONMEBOL group, edging out Uruguay for a ticket to next summer's World Cup. La Celeste, due to their inferior goal difference, have been made to settle for a playoff place.
Ecuador seal trip to Brazil 2014
Despite a 2-1 defeat to Chile on Tuesday evening, Ecuador have confirmed their place at Brazil 2014.
While Ecuador are a team without many star names -- perhaps with the exception of Manchester United winger Antonio Valencia -- they have proven to be a solid outfit, with only Argentina and Colombia conceding fewer goals in South American qualification. However, they're unfortunately left wanting in attack, with scoring goals their biggest problem. Still, it should be interesting to track their progress in their first World Cup since 2006.
