Chile have sealed their place in the 2014 World Cup in impressive fashion, downing Ecuador when a draw would have done just fine. They were at their best in the first half, dominating for the full 45 minutes as they took a two-goal lead into the break. While Jorge Sampaoli's men were less impressive in the second half, they still held on for a 2-1 victory without much of a problem.

Even though a draw would have benefited both sides, Chile never played for one against Ecuador. Thanks to the lack of a lopsided result either way, both teams have qualified for the World Cup.
Because Uruguay were unable to make up the goal differential between them and Ecuador, the Ecuadorians have qualified for the World Cup despite their loss.
Alexis Sanchez netted Chile's opener in the 35th minute after a long spell of dominance that saw Chile control possession in Ecuador's half for the entire game up until that point and go close on multiple occasions. Eugenio Mena picked up the assist with a cross into the center of the box, which was nodded in by Sanchez. Three minutes later. Sanchez assisted Gary Medel by nodding on a corner for him to finish off as Chile expanded their lead.
Ecuador pulled a goal back on the break in the 66th minute on an impressive break. Much like they have throughout qualifying, they created the goal with a counter down the wings through Antonio Valencia. The Manchester United man found Caicedo with a through ball, and he finished off from close range.
While the Ecuadorians never created another similar chance, they won’t be too disappointed with a decent road performance and a place in the finals.
