Wednesday’s UEFA Champions League action was light on upsets, though Galatasaray did manage to steal a point in Turin. PSG, Bayern and Real Madrid weren’t challenged, while Manchester United drew Shakhtar away.
Bayern make statement with thrashing of City

Julian FinneySo while Bayern didn’t add to their lead, and never really threatened Hart, their advantage was never really threatened. City never got forward and Bayern knocked the ball around with ease.
City did their best to make a match of it late when Alvaro Negredo had a gorgeous turn and shot to bring them within two goals, but it wasn’t enough. Not even Jerome Boateng’s red card, given for denying Toure a clear goalscoring opportunity with a tackle from behind, could really bring City back into the match. Bayern were better from the first minute to the last, and doing that to the Citizens puts the rest of Europe on notice -- again.

Claudio VillaAfter fighting back from a 1-0 deficit to take the lead with three minutes left to play, Juventus were undone by a lapse of concentration that allowed Galatasaray to strike back and earn a 2-2 draw.
For the most part the first half in Turin was quite poor. In saying that, I’m complementing Galatasaray because their highly compact and effective defense combined with excellent support from the midfield really stifled Juventus’ attack.

Julian FinneyManchester United earned a 1-1 draw at the Donbass Arena, navigating their most difficult group stage match with aplomb. Having neutralised Shakhtar Donetsk for much of the match, they’ll be disappointed to have left Ukraine with only a point, but considering the damage Shakhtar have done to Premier League teams in the past, this was a fine result.
The first major incident of the match was a penalty shout. After a period of Shakhtar pressure, Tom Cleverley lunged in at Alex Teixeira in the box, making solid contact with the Brazilian’s ankle without getting anywhere very near the ball. Astonishingly, the hosts’ appeals were denied, and United escaped.

Lennart PreissRule No. 1 of being a goalkeeper: Keep the ball out of the net.
That rule comes before “you can use your hands,” which is important because Matús Kozácik could not use his hands on a backpass Wednesday and still violated rule No. 1.

To pull off a repeat performance at the Bernabéu will be a massive challenge, especially with Madrid smarting after their weekend loss.

Jasper JuinenParis Saint Germain’s expected romp through Group C continues on Wednesday when they host Benfica at the Parc de Princes. The Portuguese should be the Parisians’ biggest challenge in the group stage, but asking them to win at PSG is probably asking a little much of Benfica.

Sebastian WidmannCity’s season isn’t going as well, with just three wins from six league matches, including a loss to Aston Villa over the weekend, but if there is one thing Manuel Pellegrini has changed at the club, it is their Champions League form. Of course, the sample size is absurdly small, but the Citizens’ 3-0 win at Viktoria Plzen in their opener was more convincing than City have looked in Europe for years, and has them feeling like maybe this will be the year that they qualify for the knockout stages.
