Borussia Dortmund jumped out to a lead in the first minute and eased to a 2-0 victory over Mainz on Saturday.
Borussia Dortmund vs. Mainz: Final score 2-0, BVB get ready for Real Madrid with win
Marco Reus started the scoring early as Borussia Dortmund eased past Mainz.
Marco Reus opened the scoring just 33 seconds into the match after Christian Wetklo bungled a long ball from Mats Hummels. Wetklo ran into Robert Lewandoski and Nikolce Noveski letting the ball fall to the feet of Reus. The midfielder quickly shot the ball into the empty net to make it 1-0.
Robert Lewandowski thought he bagged the second goal in the 29th minute, but it was disallowed for offside. BVB kept pressing for another goal, but it didn’t come until the 87th minute. Lewandowski, scoring in his 12th straight match, finished a simple tap-in after a great run and pass from Lukasz Piszczek.
The win continues the momentum that BVB have been building in recent weeks heading into their first UEFA Champions League semifinal since the 1997-98 season. They’ll host Real Madrid on Wednesday.
Mainz continue their slide down the table with the loss. After looking like they could potentially put together a challenge for a Champions League place, they could fall as far as 10th if Nürnberg win tomorrow.
