La Liga Saturday: Granada close to safety, Real Sociedad stay in fourth
Valencia put Real Sociedad under early pressure with a win over Getafe but the Txuri-urdin responded with a win of their own later in the day to remain in fourth place. Granada got a big win over Osasuna that moves them to the edge of safety for next season.
Getafe 0-1 Valencia
Valencia earned their third straight win and third straight clean sheet in a 1-0 defeat of Getafe. Jérémy Mathieu’s goal in the 44th minute was all the visitors needed to secure the full points as they continue to battle with Real Sociedad for fourth place. The goal came after a free kick was played short to Ever Banega who quickly centered to Mathieu at the top of the Getafe area. The defender drove a lovely shot past Miguel Moya from 20-yards out, giving Los Che the lead and the eventual win.
Valencia remain in fifth thanks to Real Sociedad's win, but at least they keep pressure on their rivals for fourth with just two weeks to go.
Granada are on the cusp of being safe for another season thanks to a 3-0 defeat of Osasuna today.Youssef El Arabi’s 7th goal of the season put Granada ahead in the first half, getting behind the Osasuna defense and directing a Guillherme Siqueira cross into the back of the net.
Siqueira added a second for Granada late in the second half, beating goalkeeper Roberto with a cheeky Panenka-esque penalty. Diego Buonanotte added a third in stoppage time to put a little extra icing on the proverbial cake.
Sevilla vs. Real Sociedad
Ivan Rakitic scored twice in the opening 16 minutes, first on a sliding shot in the 10th minute that put Sevilla ahead then again six minutes later when he headed a Real Sociedad free kick into his own goal.
Whoops.
Real took the lead in the 24th minute when Imanol Agirretxe finished off a Carlos Martinez cross and Real survived to the finish with the one goal lead for a precious and important victory. Real stay just ahead of Valencia for fourth place with the in.
