Real Esteli's Champions League is as good as over after a 1-0 loss to Olimpia. The Nicaraguan club now has two losses in two matches, both at home, essentially leaving Group 2 as a two-team battle between Olimpia and Sporting Kansas City.
Real Esteli vs. Olimpia: Final score 0-1, Leones win in Nicaragua
Olimpia joined Sporting KC atop Group 2 with a win of their own at Real Esteli.
Olimpia weren’t especially good, managing just two shots from inside the box all match. They were shot happy, but they were all from long range and Justo Lorente wasn’t asked to work hard for much of the match. He only had to make one save, albeit a great one, but he got beat once too and that proved to be the difference.
Bayron Mendez scored the winning goal just after halftime, but it was Ramiro Bruschi who did the hard part. Bruschi slipped a gorgeous pass in for Mendez, who finished first time to earn Olimpia three points in Nicaragua.
With the win, Olimpia now sit joint top of Group 2 with Sporting. Each team has won at Real Esteli, setting the stage for next week’s clash between the two in Honduras.
