CONCACAF Champions League roundup: Cruz Azul, Toluca and Sporting SM all win
Matchday 2 in the CONCACAF Champions League came to a close with wins by Cruz Azul, Toluca and Sporting SM.
Once again, the Liga MX clubs had no problem in the continent’s championship, with two more picking up wins on Thursday and leaving Tijuana’s Matchday 1 draw in El Salvador as the lone dropped points for the country in this year’s tournament. They are top of the totem pole until someone knocks them off and right now, no one looks ready to do that.
Cruz Azul 3-0 Herediano
Three goals before halftime earned Cruz Azul three points with ease over a Herediano team that qualified for the quarterfinals a year ago. Jair Pereira notched the opener before Mariano Pavone tacked on another and Gerardo Torrado wrapped it up just before the halftime whistle as La Maquina joined Herediano atop Group 3 on three points. The difference is Cruz Azul has only played one match, while the Costa Ricans have played two.
Sporting San Miguelito 1-0 Alajuelense
It’s too bad Sporting couldn’t manage a result in their opening match against Club America because if they did, Thursday’s win would give them a chance to be Cinderella in this year’s tournament. John Pretelt scored the winner for the Panamanians to earn them an impressive win on Matchday 2, just weeks after giving America all they could handle on Matchday 1. But Sporting, as well as they played, did lose to America, and beating Alajuelense just gives them a leg up in the race to finish second.
Comunicaciones 1-2 Toluca
A Juan Cacho penalty kick proved to be the difference for Toluca, who now sit comfortably atop Group 6 with six points from two matches. Raul Nava notched the opener for the Mexcicans and while Minor Lopez scored minutes after to get things level, Toluca always had the upperhand. Then Cacho scored to restore Toluca’s lead and Jose Contreras was shown red, knocking Comunicaciones down to 10 men and essentially ending the match as well as the competition in Group 6.
