This game is pretty much impossible to predict, with both sides looking very evenly matched. Both Diego Simeone and José Mourinho share a common counterattacking style, which means we could see a cagey opening leg in Madrid on Wednesday. Then again, we might have predicted that when these sides last met in the final of the UEFA Super Cup back in 2012. On that occasion Atléti demolished Chelsea 4-1, albeit thanks to a hattrick from the now-departed Radamel Falcao.
Much of the pre-match attention is focused on whether or not Atléti will field Chelsea's loanee goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, given that an agreement in the loan deal supposedly stipulated that the Spanish club would have to pay several million euros to the Blues if he did play against them. Aside from that, Atléti will hope to have midfielder Arda Turan back from a groin injury in time, while Chelsea's Eden Hazard will have to shake off a calf problem if he's to play. His teammate, defender Branislav Ivanović, is suspended.
