Chelsea are going to have to play the rest of Tuesday’s UEFA Champions League match against Atlético Madrid without Petr Cech. Judging by how quickly he exited the game, he may be out for longer than that. He had to come off injured early in the first half.
Petr Cech injury: Chelsea goalkeeper substituted against Atlético Madrid
Chelsea are in trouble in their Champions League tie against Atlético Madrid after Petr Cech went down.
Cech made a save early in the first half and came down very awkwardly on his right arm. He made contact with the crossbar, then landed on Raul Garcia and came down hard on his right arm. He instantly called for a substitution and appeared to be in serious pain as he walked off the pitch with Chelsea's physio.
He was replaced by Mark Schwarzer, Chelsea's veteran backup. While Schwarzer has played in plenty of fairly big games in his career, he's been a bit shaky this season and hasn't ever played in a club game this big. However, Schwarzer is a veteran of multiple World Cups.
And let’s make the joke you’re all thinking about right now: No, Thibaut Courtois cannot be recalled from his loan mid-match.
