Arsenal's defence is looking horrendously light at present, with Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker backed up by 19-year-old Calum Chambers, a fullback, and ... then it's probably Mathieu Flamini, who is barely even a footballer. Although the Gunners have been heavily linked to star striker Radamel Falcao, the back line is far more likely to see reinforcements on deadline day.
Arsenal line up Aston Villa captain to reinforce defence
Arsene Wenger has his eye on Aston Villa’s captain to help save his depleted back line. Aston Villa, presumably, are unhappy about this.

Manchester City's Matija Nastasic has already been linked to a move to the Emirates, but he might have to compete with Aston Villa skipper Ron Vlaar, who stood out in the heart of the Netherlands defence during the World Cup -- the Mail have just claimed that the Gunners are sniffing around the 29-year-old. Vlaar, of course, is a vital cog in the Villa machine, and Paul Lambert will be desperate to retain him following the club's best start to the Premier League season in years.
If Vlaar does move at the last moment, it’ll cost Arsenal a pretty penny, but would give them the defensive depth they’ve been so desperately lacking and could even supplant Mertesacker as a starter alongside Koscielny.
