Arsenal, United get extension on Welbeck deal

Ian WaltonExactly what is holding up the transfer at this point remains unclear. It could be the medical, paperwork or just some of the final details of the deal. They could not have gotten the extension if they couldn’t show that the deal was essentially done so clearly they have made significant progress and Welbeck should be an Arsenal player before long.
Arsenal went into the day needing a central defender and a holding midfielder, with a striker third on the board because of the injury to Olivier Giroud. They didn’t get the defender or midfielder, but they did get Welbeck, which may disappoint some supporters, but it beats not signing anyone.

Christopher LeeCarvalho had a brilliant season for Sporting last year and put in a decent showing at the World Cup, leading to interest from big clubs in England. But Sporting are in the Champions League this season, so they can afford to keep Carvalho around for another year. A good spell in that competition might lead to Carvalho collecting an even bigger fee as well.
Castles didn’t report a fee, but bids for Carvalho have been rumored to be in the region of £25m. He’s just 22, so Sporting aren’t risking his value plummeting anytime soon. They can afford to wait for a bigger offer.

Mark ThompsonWelbeck in Arsenal medical -- report

Ian WaltonAfter being linked to the likes of Radamel Falcao earlier on deadline day only to see the Colombian head for Manchester instead, it might be a little frustrating for the fans to take such a significant step down in quality -- but any comparative annoyance is surely erased by the fact that any striker is being signed at all, which looked in some doubt for a while.

Getty ImagesConcrete fees haven’t been reported, but the pair is likely to cost Southampton somewhere in the neighborhood of £20m, and they’ll come in on very similar fees.
Alderweireld moved from Ajax to Atléti last season, but couldn’t get into the first team ahead of Miranda and Diego Godin. Mane starred in the Europa League for Salzburg last season, and has been utterly dominant in Austria.

Alex LiveseySunderland fans had been hoping to bring Borini back to the Stadium of Light after his successful season with the Black Cats, but it looks like that isn’t going to happen.

Juan Manuel Serrano ArceCanales isn’t exactly like Cleverley, but might serve the same function for Villa. He usually plays higher up the pitch and is a bit more creative than the United man, but obviously has an inferior fitness record and might not be quite as good at simply keeping possession.

Ben HoskinsHowever, he’s certainly a solid Premier League player, and would be a good capture for the Potters.

Paul GilhamSebastian Coates to join Sunderland on loan

Vince CaligiuriThe 23-year-old has only started six Premier League matches since making the move to Anfield three years ago, with the international having struggled with a string of injury problems. As such, the opportunity for him to leave and get regular first-team football is one all parties have looked to take advantage of.
If Coates can finally deliver on the promise that marked his arrival at Anfield from Uruguayan club Nacional, he’ll be a pretty good deadline day addition.

Shaun BotterillValencia are doing pretty well financially these days and could feasibly pay a big fee for Negredo while matching the wages he makes at Manchester City, but it’s tough to figure out why they’d agree to a deal like this. Perhaps they don’t think they can pay for Negredo now, but believe they will when the Nou Mestalla (finally) opens? Or will the obligation only kick in if Valencia qualify for Europe next season? There are a lot of questions that need to be answered here, because on the surface, that’s a very strange deal.
But terms aside, Valencia bringing in Negredo makes a lot of sense. Their only first-team strikers are youngster Paco Alcacer, Jonas and Rodrigo. The latter two have played more recently as an attacking midfielder and a winger, respectively. Negredo would instantly become first choice if he signed for Los Che.

Claudio Villa28-year-old Guarín joined Inter from Porto back in 2012, but he has never really established himself as one of the nerazzurri’s crucial first-team players. That hasn’t stopped him making 26 Serie A starts in each of the last two seasons, as well as featuring for his national team at the recent World Cup in Brazil.

Paul ThomasAccording to the Chronicle, Marseille, Lens and Bordeaux were all offered Yanga-Mbiwa earlier this summer, though his wages exceeded what the French clubs were prepared to pay. The good news is that Newcastle seem to have struck a deal with Roma, who could do with some defensive reinforcement after losing Medhi Benatia, Rafel Tolói and Tin Jedvaj this summer.

Matthias HangstHernández has Real Madrid medical

Tim Fuller-USA TODAY SportsMadrid have been on the lookout for a rotation striker since the departure of youngster Álvaro Morata to Juventus in the summer, and it looks like Hernández is the chosen one.
Read Article >André Ayew in demand

Kevin C. CoxThese rumours have been flying around for the last few days, despite Ayew seemingly featuring prominently in the plans of new Marseille coach Marcelo Bielsa. The Argentine has used the forward in all four of their Ligue 1 games so far this season, with the Lille native having impressed in their recent 4-0 thrashing of Nice.
It would be a surprise to see him leave Marseille, and his capture would no doubt be a coup for those middling Premier League sides. He’s a versatile, quick attacker capable of playing anywhere across the attack, with intelligent movement and excellent dribbling his best attributes. If he does move to England, he shouldn’t have a problem adapting to the game.
Read Article >Might Man United join race for Falcao?

Michael ReganThe report says that Manchester United will pay Monaco €65 million for Falcao.
If the Red Devils are going to sign players on deadline day, it should be for a centerback or a central midfielder. Falcao is neither, and to make matters more confounding, he plays the one position Manchester United already have top end talent.
Read Article >Monaco to turn to Soldado?

Andrew Caballero-ReynoldsThe Spaniard arrived from Valencia last summer, but hasn’t been a hit at White Hart Lane. The 29-year-old scored just six goals in 28 Premier League appearances last summer, and has played just 10 minutes of league football under Mauricio Pochettino this season. His departure is looking pretty likely.
According to the Telegraph, Monaco have joined AC Milan, Juventus and AS Roma on the list of those interested, but the Ligue 1 outfit are said to favour a loan move over forking out Spurs’ £13 million asking price. He’s certainly nowhere near the calibre of Falcao, but then again, few are. As a pretty low-budget, solid striking option, Soldado wouldn’t be a terrible signing for Leonardo Jardim’s side.
Read Article >Arsenal line up Ron Vlaar swoop

Dean MouhtaropoulosIf Vlaar does move at the last moment, it’ll cost Arsenal a pretty penny, but would give them the defensive depth they’ve been so desperately lacking and could even supplant Mertesacker as a starter alongside Koscielny.

Denis DoyleQPR reportedly interested in Jermain Defoe

Tom Szczerbowski-USA TODAY SportsAlthough Toronto FC general manager Tim Bezbatchenko would not confirm any club names, he did say he had fielded some offers.
“We have received an offer and we have discussed it internally,” Bezbatchenko told reporters following Nelsen’s firing. “I think that when you score as many goals as he has and you have the reputation and background that he has it’s not uncommon to receive these offers.”
