Sunderland poised to sign Sebastian Coates on loan

Liverpool’s Uruguayan centre-back Sebastian Coates is set to join Sunderland on a season-long loan.

Sunderland will sign Uruguayan centre-back Sebastian Coates on a season-long loan from Liverpool according to a report in the Daily Mail.

The 23-year-old has only started six Premier League matches since making the move to Anfield three years ago, with the international having struggled with a string of injury problems. As such, the opportunity for him to leave and get regular first-team football is one all parties have looked to take advantage of.

With the summer signing of Dejan Lovren, Liverpool certainly have enough cover at defence to allow Coates to leave. His arrival will strengthen a Sunderland defence that has looked far too shaky over the last couple of seasons, with the likes of Valentin Roberge and Wes Brown having failed to perform with the requisite consistency.

If Coates can finally deliver on the promise that marked his arrival at Anfield from Uruguayan club Nacional, he’ll be a pretty good deadline day addition.
