2011 BNP Paribas Open Results: Novak Djokovic Tops Rafael Nadal To Remain Undefeated
Rafael Nadal might be the No. 1 player in the world, but he wasn't much for Serbia's Novak Djokovic to handle during the final match of the 2011 BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, Calif. In all five previous meetings, Nadal had been the one to shake his arms, racket in hand, in triumph when the final ball fell out. But Djokovic is on a hot streak.
Djokovic defeated Nadal 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 to remain undefeated at 18-0. Djokovic’s other 2011 titles include one from Dubai and one from Australia. Despite his victory, Djokovic called Nadal the greatest player ever.
The ATP released new rankings after the match. Nadal remains the world No. 1 at 14-3, but Djokovic bumped Sweden’s Roger Federer from the No. 2 spot. Nadal hasn’t won a title since October 2010.
Djokovic beat Federer in the semifinals in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4. Djokovic last beat both Federer and Nadal in the same tournament in 2007 at Montreal. The Serbian is just the third player to beat both Nadal and Federer in the same tournament twice.
