When the final point ended, Novak Djokovic raised both arms in the air in celebration. His triumphant gesture celebrated more than just victory.
2011 Sony Ericsson Open Results: Novak Djokovic Remains Unstoppable, Rafael Nadal Into Semifinals Against Roger Federer
His 6-3, 6-1 defeat of American Mardy Fish extended Djokovic’s win streak to 25, with 23 wins this year.
Djokovic also tied tennis great Ivan Lendl’s match-win streak of 25. It’s the best start of any tennis player since Lendl’s beginning in 1986.
The victory also places Djokovic into the final round. He is one win away from winning his fourth title in as many tournaments of the 2011 ATP season.
“It’s his playground right now,” Fish said of Djokovic. “He’s not losing games. He’s crushing us. He’s confident and doesn’t give you much out there at all. When he does, he seems to erase it pretty well.”
The No. 2 seeded and world No. 2 Djokovic will play the winner of tonight’s semifinal match of world No. 1 Rafael Nadal against world No. 3 Roger Federer.
Nadal advanced into the semifinals after a tough third round match. The Spaniard began with a 4-0 lead on Czech’s Tomas Berdych. Nadal grabbed the first set a few games later, then dropped the second set before walking away with the third set. In the final game, Nadal held serve to win 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.
Federer should be well rested for his match against the world No. 1 after playing a six-minute match on Thursday. His opponent resigned with an injury.
