No. 32 Tsvetana Pironkova def. No. 23 Venus Williams, 6-2 6-3. A bare handful of minutes after No. 7 Serena Williams was ousted from Wimbledon 2011 by No. 9 Marion Bartoli, an even more lopsided upset was delivered to her big sister. Extremely clean tennis on Pironkova’s part (just nine unforced errors in the entire match) vaulted her to her second consecutive surprise run to the Championships quarterfinals (she was a semifinalist as well in 2010’s tournament). And she won’t even be the lowest-ranked remaining player in the women’s draw: With today’s bloodbath, two unseeded women, Sabine Lisicki and Tamira Paszak, lurk in the quarters. Pironkova will face No. 8 Petra Kvitova for the right to presumably advance to take on No. 4 Victoria Azarenka in the semis.
