Wimbledon 2011 Results: Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic Through To Quarters

Match results from Day 7 of Wimbledon 2011, where the men’s draw remains considerably more orderly than the women’s. Whatever big-money matchup you were looking for between the top three ATP players, the possibility remains alive.

    • No. 3 Roger Federer def. No. 18 Mikhail Youzhny, 6-7(5) 6-3 6-3 6-3. The All England Club’s No. 1 Court has already seen quite enough drama for one day, with Serena Williams’ upset loss to Marion Bartoli. The Maestro, apparently agreeing, waited just 54 minutes to flip the switch on his Championships buzzsaw and earn his ninth straight quarterfinals berth in SW19. The six-time grass-court king will next encounter No. 12 Jo Wilfried Tsonga, who just upset No. 7 David Ferrer in straight sets.

2011 Wimbledon: Mardy Fish Keeps American Hopes Alive With Upset Victory

No. 10 Mardy Fish def. No. 6 Tomas Berdych, 7-6(5) 6-4 6-4. The No. 2 Court at the All-England Club has already seen one top seed go spiraling out of the women’s draw on Day 7 of Wimbledon 2011, and American Mardy Fish, the lone U.S. player still alive in the Championships, has just added another. He did this while carrying the unconscionable sin of playing professional tennis past one’s 30th birthday, and despite never having advanced past the third round at SW19 in an eleven-year pro career. Fish dealt 23 aces to Berdych’s seven, a stat bested this tournament only by the 26 in his first-round match against Marcel Granollers.

Fish takes up the Wimbledon Grizzledy mantle from the ousted Robin Söderling, and will face the comparatively clean-cut winner of the Rafa Nadal-Juan Martin Del Potro match still in progress in the quarterfinals.

2011 Wimbledon: Andy Murray Advances To Fourth Straight Quarterfinals

No. 4 Andy Murray def. No. 17 Richard Gasquet, 7-6(3) 6-3 6-2. Great Britain’s on-again, off-again most favored son of tennis remains “the Brit” and not “the Scot” for at least one day more in the Wimbledon press corps with a too-rare straight-sets defeat of the pesky Frenchman. With just ten unforced errors and 14 aces on Murray’s part, the 2007 semifinalist was dispatched in just a shade over two hours. Afterwards, the greatest hope for a hometown win by a male player at a Grand Slam paid his respects to the royals in attendance:

Venus Williams Out At Wimbledon, Upset By No. 32 Tsvetana Pironkova

No. 32 Tsvetana Pironkova def. No. 23 Venus Williams, 6-2 6-3. A bare handful of minutes after No. 7 Serena Williams was ousted from Wimbledon 2011 by No. 9 Marion Bartoli, an even more lopsided upset was delivered to her big sister. Extremely clean tennis on Pironkova’s part (just nine unforced errors in the entire match) vaulted her to her second consecutive surprise run to the Championships quarterfinals (she was a semifinalist as well in 2010’s tournament). And she won’t even be the lowest-ranked remaining player in the women’s draw: With today’s bloodbath, two unseeded women, Sabine Lisicki and Tamira Paszak, lurk in the quarters. Pironkova will face No. 8 Petra Kvitova for the right to presumably advance to take on No. 4 Victoria Azarenka in the semis.

Wimbledon 2011 Results: Caroline Wozniacki Fails To Play Up To Ranking Again, Loses To Dominika Cibulkova

No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki suffered yet another disappointing result in a grand slam, this time falling to No. 24 Dominika Cibulkova 1-6, 7-6(5), 7-5 in the fourth round of Wimbledon 2011 on Monday.

On the back of her third round exit at the French Open, Wozniacki was upset in the fourth round of Wimbledon for the second consecutive year, though this match at least was far more competitive than the 6-2, 6-0 drubbing she was dealt by Petra Kvitova in 2010.

Serena Williams Out Of Wimbledon 2011, Falls To Marion Bartoli

No. 9 Marion Bartoli of France scored one of the biggest wins of her career Monday on Court No. 1 at the All-England Club, defeating two-time defending champion Serena Williams 6-3, 7-6(6) in the fourth round.

Bartoli broke Serena at 5-5 in the second set, and had two match points serving at 6-5, 40-15. But Serena saved both, and then a third, eventually breaking Bartoli to force a tiebreak.

Wimbledon 2011 Results: Maria Sharapova Defeats Shuai Peng In Straight Sets

Maria Sharapova is continuing to play up to her fifth seed at Wimbledon, as she has advanced to the quarterfinals after making very quick work of China’s Shuai Peng, defeating the 20th seed in the tournament in straight sets 6-4, 6-2. Peng kept things close against Sharapova in the first set, but the second set was smooth sailing for the 2004 champion.

Sharapova had never played Peng and both players struggled to settle in at the start of the match. Peng actually had a couple of break points early on, but Sharapova fought them off, then took control of the match. Peng was broken in the ninth game of the first set to give Sharapova a chance to serve for the set, and she won that service game at love to set the tone for the rest of the match. The second set went much quicker, and Sharapova finished the match with a win in under 90 minutes.
