TSN in Canada is reporting that the U.S. Department of Transportation is banning Canada’s charter planes from flying from one city to another. According to the story:
Canadian-American Cold War Over Charter Flights
Prior to a recent August ruling by the U.S. government, charter flights that carried sports teams could make several stops in American cities. The new ruling means the charters can only make one stop before heading back to Canada.
That ultimately means that if, say, the Maple Leafs have a game in New Jersey on a Tuesday and then have to play in Florida on Wednesday, they will technically have to return to Canada before flying to Florida. At least that’s how the ruling reads right now. This could clearly have far reaching impact because Canadian officials are looking to retaliate:
In retaliation, Canadian officials have launched an investigation to determine if they will take similar action against charters carrying sports teams from the United States.
Course because the NBA and MLB only have teams in Toronto, that won’t be a problem in their league. It’ll just be an issue when American NHL teams have to play games in, say Calgary and then play in Montreal. This could be the new Cold War. And this time we can’t Blame Canada.
