Duchscherer Will Miss The Season Following Hip Surgery

Try as Justin Duchscherer might, there was no avoiding this - he’s going to need an operation on his hip, and it’s going to knock him out for the rest of 2010.

Dr. Thomas Byrd, who twice performed surgery on Duchscherer’s right hip, will perform this surgery on his left hip. For Duchscherer, he does intend to try to come back again in 2011. And for the A’s, they were aware of this possible risk from the beginning.

Hip Injury Likely To Sideline Duchscherer For The Rest Of The Year

Justin Duchscherer was activated from the disabled list in time to make a start on Saturday. He was scratched from that start, though, with pain in the same hip that put him on the DL in the first place, and now nobody’s optimistic that he’ll be able to return to action in 2010:

Duchscherer, who didn’t throw a Major League pitch in 2009, was signed to an incentive-laden $1.75m, one-year contract last December. This being his second consecutive lost season, Duchscherer is going to be an interesting gamble as a free agent come the winter. He’s appeared in just 44 games and made only 27 starts since the beginning of 2007 due primarily to injuries in his left hip, his right hip, and his right elbow. He’s also spent a spell battling with clinical depression.

Sure Enough, Justin Duchscherer Lands On The DL With Hip Injury

A’s starting pitcher Justin Duchscherer was removed from his most recent start with significant pain in his hip. An MRI revealed inflammation, leading to a cortisone shot, and now the team has officially put Duchscherer on the disabled list for the injury, retroactive to April 30th:

Coming up to take Duke’s place on the roster is reliever Edwar Ramirez, who spent time with the A’s earlier in the year. Vin Mazzaro will continue to occupy the injured starter’s spot in the rotation.

Duchscherer’s Hip Injury Appears To Be Significant

Oakland starting pitcher Justin Duchscherer came out of Thursday’s game early following a mound visit by a trainer. Initially it was unclear whether he’d hurt his hip or his back, but it’s since been confirmed that his left hip was the problem. And it’s some kind of problem.

Duchscherer has previously been plagued by an arthritic right hip on which he had two separate operations in 2007 and 2008. It’s too early to say exactly what’s wrong with his left hip now, but this is in no way good news for an A’s team that’s already had to deal with a disproportionate number of injuries.

A’s Lose Duchscherer And Game As John Buck Goes Wild

Oakland added two more runs in the top of the third to build a 3-0 lead. With runners on second and third with two outs, Fox cleared the bases with a double to center.

The Blue Jays used back-to-back homers in the home half to cut the gap to 3-2. Buck led off the frame and smacked a 1-2 curveball over the wall in left. Snider then belted a first-pitch fastball over the wall in right-center field.
