Justin Duchscherer was activated from the disabled list in time to make a start on Saturday. He was scratched from that start, though, with pain in the same hip that put him on the DL in the first place, and now nobody’s optimistic that he’ll be able to return to action in 2010:
Hip Injury Likely To Sideline Duchscherer For The Rest Of The Year
Justin Duchscherer went on the disabled list Sunday, having come off it just one day before, and it’s more than likely that his season is over.
Duchscherer anticipates that he’ll need surgery to resolve the problem in his left hip because it is just like the issue he had with his right hip that required season-ending surgery in 2007. He is not yet scheduled to see specialist Dr. Thomas Byrd again, but he believes he will go to Nashville for an exam soon.
Duchscherer, who didn’t throw a Major League pitch in 2009, was signed to an incentive-laden $1.75m, one-year contract last December. This being his second consecutive lost season, Duchscherer is going to be an interesting gamble as a free agent come the winter. He’s appeared in just 44 games and made only 27 starts since the beginning of 2007 due primarily to injuries in his left hip, his right hip, and his right elbow. He’s also spent a spell battling with clinical depression.
The likelihood is that Vin Mazzaro will assume Duchscherer’s place in the rotation.
