Oakland starting pitcher Justin Duchscherer came out of Thursday’s game early following a mound visit by a trainer. Initially it was unclear whether he’d hurt his hip or his back, but it’s since been confirmed that his left hip was the problem. And it’s some kind of problem.
Duchscherer’s Hip Injury Appears To Be Significant
Duchecherer said hip problem feels identical to the one he had with other hip, which required two surgeries.
Duchscherer has previously been plagued by an arthritic right hip on which he had two separate operations in 2007 and 2008. It’s too early to say exactly what’s wrong with his left hip now, but this is in no way good news for an A’s team that’s already had to deal with a disproportionate number of injuries.
He's dealt with hip issue past few starts but it worsened tonight. "Like a jolt" in the hip, he said.
Trevor Cahill was recalled from AAA to fill in for the injured Brett Anderson, and now Vin Mazzaro will be recalled to fill in for the injured Duchscherer for however long he ends up being out. The A’s were built as a team who could sustain some aches and pains, but their depth is really being put to the test, While Duchscherer is not the loss that Anderson is, with Ben Sheets struggling, this rotation couldn’t afford much in the way of further disappointment.
