World Cup 2010, Spain Vs. Honduras: Spain Back On Track With 2-0 Win

David Villa had two goals and could have had two more as Spain cruised to a 2-0 victory Monday over Honduras. The win pulled Spain even with Switzerland for second in Group H while Honduras is at the bottom of the group, having yet to earn a point.

Villa created an astounding goal in the 19th minute when he took the fall on the left flank, ran at Sergio Mendoza and Amado Guevara, split them at the edge of the box and cut-back against Osman Chavez to put a right footed shot into the upper-right-hand corner of goal as he was falling to the pitch.

Spain would take the 1-0 lead into half time, shortly there after Villa recorded his second goal when a deflected shot from 20 yards out looped past Noel Valladares for Villa’s 40th career international goal.

Villa’s best chance for a hat-trick eluded him in the 62nd minute when the Barcelona attacker pushed a penalty kick wide of goal. Villa would have another chance let in the match, while Sergio Ramos and Cesc Fabregas also came close to adding goals.

Honduras went the whole match without a shot on goal, holding only 35 percent of the game’s possession.

Honduras remains at the bottom of Group H with no points, holding a -3 goal difference ahead of their Friday match with Switzerland, who they must beat to have a chance to advance.

Honduras would also need Spain to lose to Chile, also being played Friday, to have a chance to advance on goal difference.

If Spain wins their match on Friday, they are into the second round provided Switzerland does not win and finish with a better goal difference.
