From 68 to two, the 2011 NCAA Tournament has reached its final stage after Butler and UConn advanced to the NCAA Championship Game with Final Four wins on Saturday. VCU gave Butler its best shot, but came up short after being unable to sustain the frenetic pace that’s been consistent throughout the tournament. The Rams came out of the locker hot in both the first and second halves, jumping out to a quick lead to start the game and clawing back from a six-point deficit in the second half to give the Bulldogs a scare. But Butler was too much, and pulled away with the game winding down to secure a 70-62 win and a return trip to the NCAA Championship Game.
The Bulldogs will meet UConn, who took down Kentucky in a hard-fought, back-and-forth game. UConn built a six-point lead by holding Kentucky scoreless for a five and a half minute stretch midway through the second half, then held on for a 55-54 win despite not making a field goal over the final 2:28. Kemba Walker was everywhere again for the Huskies, finishing with 16 points, six rebounds and seven assists as UConn continued an impressive run that began in the Big East Tournament.
