According to multiple sources, Avram Grant is out at West Ham United, and will be replaced by Martin O'Neill. While the Irons are having a quite poor season, sitting last in the table, they are also in the Carling Cup semi-finals, and earned a 2-1 win in the first leg over Birmingham City this week. Granted, the win came via Blues goalkeeper Ben Foster forgetting how to catch the ball, but West Ham still won.
Avrim Grant To Be Sacked After Arsenal Match, Martin O’Neill To Step In At West Ham
In fact, prior to their match with Newcastle, West Ham had been on a comparatively good run of form, taking eight points from four matches. But the 5-0 drubbing at St. James' was apparently too much for David Sullivan and David Gold, who this week refused to publicly back their manager, and have now let it be known that he will be sacked following the match against Arsenal.
And so West Ham turn to Martin O'Neill, the man who left Aston Villa in a huff just days before the start of the season. Considering one of the reasons O'Neill left Villa Park was that he wasn't given a blank check, it seems unlikely that this appointment is one for the long term. But in the short term, O'Neill's no-nonsense footballing style will likely be sufficient to keep West Ham from slipping down to the Championship. One has to wonder, though: will it come at the expense of his former club, with the Villa currently sharing the relegation zone with West Ham?
