Occasionally, there are clauses tucked into NFL contracts that end up having big ramifications. Apparently, cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha's contract with the Oakland Raiders is just the latest entry in that series.
Nnamdi Asomugha Has Contract Voided, Will Become Free Agent
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Asomugha’s contract was voided after a 2010 season that saw him fail to meet certain incentives.
To achieve his incentives, Asomugha had to play in a greater number of defensive plays in 2010 than he did in 2009, and this season Asomugha played in only 14 games whereas he played in all 16 in 2009.
He also could have achieved his incentives by improving upon on his interceptions, fumble recoveries or sacks this season -- but he didn’t have any interceptions, fumble recoveries or sacks this season.
The voiding of his contract means that Asomugha will be a free agent in the upcoming offseason, because of language that also stipulates that the Raiders cannot place a franchise tag on him. He instantly becomes one of the most coveted players available, and will likely be hotly pursued by any number of teams looking for a shutdown corner.
